"Photography is a varied and ambiguous process in which the only common denominator among its practitioners is their instrument. What emerges from this recording machine does not escape the economic constratints of a world of waste, of tensions that become increasingly intense and of insane ecological consequences."
"For me, the camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity, the master of the instant which- in visual terms -questions and decides simultaneously. In order to "give a meaning" to the world, one has to feel oneself involved in what he frames through the viewfinder. This attitudes requires concentration, a discipline of mind, sensitivity, and a sense of geometry. It is by great economy of means that one arrives at simplicity of expression. One must always take photos with the greatest respect for the subject and for oneself."
참고로 카르티에 브레송의 인터뷰를 다룬 다큐멘터리 < The Impassioned Eye >에서는 사진을 찍는 행위를 그림을 그리는 것에 비유했다. '(필름이 담긴) 카메라는 일종의 스케치북이고 빛은 향수(perfume)와 같다.' 라고 말하고 있다. 사진을 보다 본격적으로 찍기 시작한 20대 초이전 까지 그리고 70년대 이후에 사진 작업을 그만두고 그림에 몰두했던 그는 사진 찍는 행위를 그가 애착을 가지던 그림 활동에 비유했다는 점은 이해가 가는 점이다.

"To take photographs means to recognize- simultaneously and within a fraction of a second -both the fact itself and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that give it meaning. It is putting one's head, one's eye and one's heart on the same axis.
여기서 '사실'자체와 의미를 주는 '사진적 요소'를 구분했다는 점은 단순한 배경 혹은 기하학적 프레임워크만을 의미하는 것은 아닌것 같다. 사람들에게 공통적으로 어필할 수 있는 '상황적 진실'을 읽어내는 능력이라고 말하면 조금 가깝지 않을까 싶다.
"As far as I am concerned, taking photography is a means of understanding which cannot be separated from other means of visual expression. It is a way of shouting, of freeing oneself, not of proving or asserting one's own originality. It is a way of life."
박노아 선생님이 말씀하신 '자신에 대한 관심(egoistic interest)'과 '자기 발견/이해'라는 표현과 맥락을 같이하는 표현이 아닐런지...
외국 친구들과 지도 교수의 뒷담화를 하면 꼭 쓰던 말중의 하나가 way of life란 말...
그 잘날 학위를 한다는 것이 대단한 것이 아니라, 단지 삶의 한 방식일 뿐이며 단지 연구 대상에대한 애정 혹은 열정 하나만으로도 나머지(외부적인 제약)를 극복할 수 있는 사람들의 것이라고 말이다. 하지만 많은 사람들이 착각을 하는 것은 그만큼 사람들이 진실을 외면하고 자신에게 솔직하지 못하다는 증거가 아닐까.
성철 스님의 不欺自心의 가르침은 두고 두고 큰 반향을 나에게 갖는건, 자신에게 솔직하는것
자신의 말을 지키라는 것, 말과 행동이 일치하는 삶이 얼마나 힘든가를 반증하기도한다.
